About the Course
In this course participants will be building on concepts introduced in Grade 1. Using the ABRSM syllabus, students will go further into the concepts of pitch, rhythm, keys, scales and more. This course is for students who already have a basic knowledge of music theory up to Grade 1 level, and either wish to support their instrumental music lessons or simply advance their musical knowledge further.
This course is part 2 of 5 in a programme of courses which aim at progressing students up to the level of ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory.
This course may be used as preparation for ABRSM music theory exams. ABRSM Grade 1-5 music theory exams are available as online examinations only. For the latest information on online music theory exams please refer to the ABRSM Website
In this course we will cover:
Simple time signatures of 2/2, 3/2, 4/2, and 3/8
Grouping of notes and rests within these time signatures
Triplets and triple note groups
Ledger lines and the extension of the stave
Relative major and minor keys
Construction of a harmonic minor scale
Scales, Key Signatures and tonic triads (A, Bb and Eb majors, plus a, e and d minors)
More intervals above the tonic
More common terms and signs relating to tempo, dynamics, performance directions and articulation

Progress onto my 11-Week Online Music Theory Course: Grade 3
What level do you need to be to take this course?
Before you take this course candidates must have either:
Passed a Grade 1 ABRSM Online Music Theory exam
Passed a Grade 1 Trinity Theory of Music exam
Successfully completed my 11-Week Online Music Theory: Grade 1 course
It is strongly encouraged that you meet one of these requirements before applying. However if you have significant other musical experience it may still be possible to take this course. Please first get in contact via my contact form to gain permission.

Manuscript paper, pencil, eraser
Notebook and pen
This course will use the piano to explain musical concepts, so access to a piano or electronic keyboard would be useful but not necessary.
