About the Course
In this course participants will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of music theory and notation. This course will start at the very beginning, and will introduce the basics of music theory using the ABRSM Grade 1 syllabus. This course is aimed at those will little or no previous knowledge in music theory, or those looking to support their instrumental music lessons.
This course is part 1 of 5 in a programme of courses which aim at progressing students up to the level of ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory.
This course may be used as preparation for ABRSM music theory exams. ABRSM Grade 1-5 music theory exams are available as online examinations only. For the latest information on online music theory exams please refer to the ABRSM Website
In this course we will cover:
Note values of a semibreve, minim, crotchet, quaver and semiquaver
Tied notes
Single Dotted Notes
Simple Time Signatures of 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4
Bar Lines
Grouping of notes within the above time signatures
Pitch names on both Treble (G) and Bass (F) clefs
Sharps, flats, naturals, and their cancellation
Tones, Semitones and the construction of a major scale
Scales and Key Signatures for major keys (C, G, D and F)
Scale Degrees
Intervals above the tonic
Frequently used terms and signs relating to tempo, dynamics, performance directions and articulation

What level do you need to be to take this course?
No previous knowledge in music theory is necessary to take this course. However, most students who take this course will have already started learning an instrument or voice.

Notebook and pen
This course will use the piano to explain musical concepts, so access to a piano or electronic keyboard would be useful but not necessary.
