What is Music Theory and why is it so important?
Music theory is the language of music
It is the grammar that underpins how we write music down, and can be found in most of the music we hear today, from classical to jazz and popular music and more.
Quite simply, it is the skill of being able to read and understand music
To be successful, it is crucial for all musicians to read, understand and work with this language confidently.
This is why so many examining bodies make it a requirement to pass Grade 5 music theory before progressing onto advanced performance grades
Without proper training in music theory, students will feel as if they know less and less as they progress further and further. This destroys confidence and enthusiasm, and can lead to abandoning their musical studies altogether.
Whatever your child’s current musical ability, a course in music theory can help them get ahead.
When they understand how and why music is written down the way it is, they will feel the benefits in all aspects of their music making, whether performing, composing, improvising, or just listening!
Get in tune with a Music Theory Course
This programme of five music theory courses is designed to progress students up to Grade 5 music theory level. Over 11 weeks each individual course will cover all the information needed to pass the specified grade - the same duration as a school term.
This means that within five school terms (or 18 months) students can go from the absolute beginning to being ready to take a Grade 5 theory exam. That’s less time than a music GCSE!
